Cafiesencia’s Profile

Cafi Cultura Puertorriqueña,Inc. (Cafiesencia) was founded in 2008 by a group of professionals,farmers, academics, community leaders and government employees, who identifiedthe need to raise the quality of life of the coffee zone, valuing itsagriculture, natural, historical and human capital and their premier product:specialty coffee, and implementing sustainable practices in the region.

Thisgroup of volunteers works together to fulfill the organizations mission – topromote a holistic sustainable vision of the coffee zone.

In2009 Cafiesencia was granted the local tax exemption as an educational nonprofit organization under the code 1101 (4).

Cafiesenciastarted to conduct educational talks and “conversatorios” (communitygatherings) in the coffee zone, southwest and metro area and startedparticipating in local media and coffee industry and environmentalistsevents. Examples of these efforts can be seen in our website www.cafipr.org or our blog www.cafiesencia.blogspot.com

In2009 the Puerto Rican Foundation for the Humanities awarded a grant to carryout the project “Caminos del Café” (Roads of Coffee”) – the 1rst series ofeducational talks aimed at a primary target group of students and teachers inthe public school system in the coffee zone. This tour focused on educating about sustainability, environmental stewardship, and the importance ofachieving a successful coexistence of agriculture and conservation. The project spanned over two years, dozens ofschools participated in the conferences. In addition, the metro area was also visited by the project and hundredsof people from different backgrounds attended the activities. And in a unique opportunity to bring Dr. JaneGoodall, the famous English anthropologist, to Puerto Rico,Cafiesencia coordinated her visit to the coffee zone. This visit had a major resonance among amyriad of audiences – farmers, workers, students, parents, entrepreneurs,government officials, retirees – they all came together in Castañer to meet andshare with Dr. Goodall ideas on how to improve and preserve the coffee forestecosystems. The visit was widely coveredby mainstream media of the island and beyond. Record of all these activities can be found in the website.

Cafiesenciaprovides specialized seminars on sustainable coffee production,micro-enterprises and brands, consumer education, in conjunction with severalinstitutions and individuals like The Entrepreneurship Center for Women inPuerto Rico’s Agriculture (CEMA) led by Dr. Gladys Gonzalez, Dr. Joaquin Chongand the Experimental Station (Coffee Waste Compost), both at the University ofPuerto Rico Mayaguez Campus, Agriculture Program at the University of PuertoRico in Utuado, Dr. Libia Gonzalez, historian and researcher at Moralon,Focusing Heritage, the annual Puerto Rico Coffee Expo Event, and the Sila M.Calderon Foundation, among others.

Cafiesenciaadvises community leaders and farmers in proposal write up, business conceptand historical and natural conservation priorities.

Cafiesenciais a member of the advisory board of Pathstone Corporation for green projects.

Cafiesenciaconducts educational tours to the coffee zone and coordinates events like theSpring Equinox where opera singing was integrated with the observation ofplanets and globular clusters celebrating the purity of the skies of the coffeezone.

Atthe moment, Cafiesencia is finishing its first book: “The Roads of Coffee” – based on theeducational tour – it is a guide to help teachers in the subjects of history,science and social studies. It will bepublished during the last quarter of 2011.

a punto de comenzar nueva cosecha 2011

Hola amigos:

Hace tiempo que no escribo aqui, es que sinceramente no entiendo muy bien como bregar con el template de este blog. Mis disculpas.

Comenzamos pronto con la nueva cosecha. Que nos deparara? mucha lluvia, broca, falta de mano de obra? cuan mejor estamos ante esta cosecha comparado con un año atras? Cuantas cuerdas de cafe han adoptado practicas sustentables? cuantos cafes organicos tenemos (con o sin el USDA certificate) Se logro colocar la sustentabilidad en las prioridades de politica publica agricola? Se han comenzado las gestiones pero nos falta un camino por recorrer.

Hace unos dias me encontre con un articulo que divulgaba un estudio de Duke University sobre nuestros lagartijos verdes (Anolis Evermanni) (vean foto abajo) que alegaba que podrian ser mas inteligentes - a que a nadie se le ocurrio utilizar esto para divulgarlo directamente a turistas de naturaleza, eco-turismo y agriturismo? Es mas como es que ningun medio de noticias lo ha colocado como Figura del Momento? Conociendo nuestra fabulosa red boricua cibernetica, esto hubiera llegado hasta Siberia.
